'a megawatt tenor with all the high notes’

Anglo-Irish tenor Joseph Doody was born in West Yorkshire. He studied at Edinburgh University, the Royal College of Music, and the National Opera Studio,  and is now building a reputation in repertoire from early to contemporary music, with an emphasis on the demanding coloratura roles of classical and romantic opera. Recent productions have included Alessandro Il Re Pastore (Mozart) at Buxton International Festival, Mosquito The Cunning Little Vixen with Welsh National Opera, Leicester Maria Stuarda for Opera UpClose, Prince Hal At the Boar’s Head (Holst) for Northern Opera Group and Toby in Offenbach’s Robinson Crusoe at West Green House. He plays the part of Captain Trevor on the first complete recording of Shamus O’ Brien by Stanford, with the orchestra of Scottish Opera conducted by David Parry, to be released later this year.

In concert Joseph has sung Bach’s Johannes-Passion (arias) with both the Hanover Band and the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields, the Matthew Passion Evangelist for Bradford Festival Choral Society, Monteverdi’s Vespers with the Dunedin Consort, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis with Southbank Sinfonia, Brahms’s Liebeslieder Waltzes with the Royal Choral Society, and many performances of Orff’s Carmina Burana - most recently with Brighton Choral Society.

A keen educator, Joseph has toured schools with potted versions of La Cenerentola, Bohème, and The Magic Flute, and has led workshops and masterclasses for both adults and children. He recently played Peter Pears in the play A Letter from Ben for the Royal Opera House’s Learning and Engagement department.

2024 saw Joseph’s debut at Salzburger Landestheater as Aufidio in Mozart’s Lucio Silla, as well as Handel’s Esther with Solomon’s Knot at the Wigmore Hall and Händel-Festspiele Halle, and the role of the Tsar Berendey in Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Snow Maiden for English Touring Opera. In 2025 he returns to the roles of Almaviva and Ramiro at Longborough Festival Opera and Opéra de Québec respectively, as well as the title roles of Offenbach’s Orpheus in the World and Carissimi’s Jonas at IF Opera.
